Hamburg. Free City gold "Schiller" Medal 1859 MS61 NGC, Gaed-2104. 34.65gm. By F. Staudigel and C. Schnitzspahn. Struck to commemorate the 100th birthday of poet Friedrich von Schiller. With the writer's bust in glorious relief and a beautiful depiction of a scene from his poem "The Bell" above the Hamburg arms. Ludwig van Beethoven said that a great poem is more difficult to set to music than a merely good one because the composer must rise higher than the poet – "who can do that in the case of Schiller?". Frosty devices throughout, with a nice reflectivity expressed within the fields culminating in a near prooflike appearance. A beautiful homage to the artist and worthy of a premium bid.
