William I the Conquerer (1066-1087) Penny ND (c. 1074-1077) MS63+ PCGS, London, Eadwine as moneyer, Two Stars type, S-1254, N-845. +PILLEM REX AN, crowned bust facing between two stars / +EDPII ON LVND, cross botonnée over quadrilateral, annulet in center. A phenomenal specimen of this scarcer type, boldly struck giving full detail; all the more dramatic for the vivid cabinet tone which has developed on both surfaces, a positive rainbow of iridescent colors gleaming from every recess. Very rare and with unique eye appeal, an extraordinary early Penny.
