William II (1087-1100) Penny ND (c. 1089-1092) MS62 NGC, Unclear mint and moneyer, Cross in Quatrefoil type, 1.40gm, S-1259, N-852. An exceptional Norman Penny, the highest certified by NGC (and the only one in Mint State) of the short-reigned son of William the Conqueror known as 'Rufus' either for his red hair or ruddy complexion. Although weakly struck on about one-third of the planchet, the remaining two-thirds more than compensate; William's portrait is absolutely razor-sharp as is the reverse cross, die polish lines notable in the field behind, topped off with a light golden glow. A highly unusual eye appeal for this early English Penny, rare and desirable thus.
