Edward IV (2nd Reign, 1471-1483) gold Angel ND (1480-1483) AU Details (Bent) NGC, London mint, Heraldic Cinquefoil mm, 5.03gm, S-2091, N-1626. St. Michael spearing dragon / A ship at sea, an "Є" and rose to either side of masthead. A splendid specimen of this popular denomination, first struck during Edward's reign and continuing beyond the medieval up until the reign of Queen Anne in 1714 (in the form of a touch-piece). The present example represents the final issue confidently attributed to Edward IV, likely closer to 1483 than 1480 judging from the wear of the dies. This wear has not in any way detracted from the eye appeal of this coin, however. Whereas these issues can often exhibit rather imperfect striking, this piece shows St. Michael in full detail as he dramatically spears the dragon, every feather of his body boldly represented (the feathers replaced in later issues by armor in an attempt to make him appear more human). Despite the 'bent' certification this coin has received, the wave to its flan is unobtrusive and is even possibly as-made. Of rich color and full original surfaces, this Angel is sure to please its next owner.
