Charles I (1625-1649) "Newark Besieged" Shilling 1646 XF45 NGC, S-3143, N-2640. An ever-popular siege type, charismatically marked 'OBS: NEWARK' in abbreviation for 'OBSIDIUM', Latin for siege. A coinage of necessity, produced from Royalist silver plate behind the walls of the besieged Newark Castle. Oftentimes these types exhibit either heavy circulation or use as jewelery due to their contemporary popularity, thus rendering this problem-free XF example an unusual sight to see. Strongly struck with only minor weakness to the date and denomination, the planchet with a light gold tone (which, at first, gives the impression of production from a gilded plate). Altogether charming, a desirable specimen and an enticing piece of English history.
