Great Britain
Charles II gold "Elephant" 2 Guineas 1664 XF40 NGC, KM425.2, S-3334. Elephant below bust. A pleasing example of this popular hallmarked issue, the first year of production for the 2 Guinea piece. The elephant below Charles's portrait denotes the origin of specie, imported from Guinea by the Royal African Company. There is something charming about the marking of metal origin on English coins, and the elephant remains perhaps the most iconic of the various hallmarks found on 17th and 18th century British coinage. This piece shows moderate wear in line with the grade, indicative of a circulating piece; its detail remains good, however, with a fully represented portrait and bold hallmark. The planchet has developed a vivid and highly attractive red tone, darkening to a near-magenta around the devices. A scarce denomination swiftly increasing in popularity and with strong eye appeal.
