James II silver gilt 'Recovery of Treasure at St. Domingo' Medal 1687 AU, 52.6mm, 54.14gm, Betts-67 (clouds variant). An immensely rare and exciting medal, commemorating the salvaging of the 1641 Spanish shipwreck Concepcion in 1687, and struck from the very silver recovered from the wreck. The obverse shows King James II alongside Queen Mary, whilst the reverse depicts the salvaging itself; a longboat inspects the carcass of Concepcion whilst Sir William Phipp's treasure recovery vessel sits on the horizon. This variety includes clouds in the sky giving the scene a welcome sense of realism. At 12 o'clock the edge rim is intentionally recessed to receive a suspension clasp, whilst at 6 o'clock the edge shows a test cut and the letter 'C' incused. This type is very rarely seen at auction; the last offered was in January 2013 at our Orlando FUN signature sale where it realized $12,925, and so we can only anticipate its final sale price 5 years on. An enigmatic historical medal.
