George III Proof Restrike 'Cartwheel' Penny 1797-SOHO PR66 Brown PCGS, Peck-1137. By W. J. Taylor. Struck in the 1850s from salvaged SOHO mint dies, this particular design is very similar to the adopted Cartwheel Penny type, but with smaller obverse lettering. Taylor concocted several new types from the old dies, but few resemble currency types so much as this - however, its restrike status is confirmed by the notable die rust on the reverse indicative of its long stint out of use. Attractive nonetheless, this piece shows a deep chocolate color to the planchet with sharp detail especially considering the age of the dies, its technical grade outstanding and almost unheard of for this type! Scarcely seen at auction let alone in this quality, this piece is sure to generate tremendous interest amongst specialist collectors.
