Great Britain
George III Proof Pattern Bank of England 5 Shillings and 6 Pence 1811 PR60 NGC, KM-PnH68, ESC-203, L&S-121 (R4). "Wreath" reverse. An extremely rare type seldom seen at auction, particularly when struck in its intended metal; mostly its more common copper variant is offered. With an argent and reflective obverse toned to a pale gold at the peripheries, the reverse flares to life with a deep dappled red and magenta tone to the center, the intriguing oak wreath border dynamically shaded with charcoal notes. Only a few examples of this superbly engraved type have been offered at auction in recent years, the last we handled being in April 2015, a PR64 graded example which realized $15,000 hammer. With supreme eye appeal and extreme rarity, we have no doubts that this present piece will attract strong attention from dedicated collectors of British patterns.
