George III Crown 1819 MS65 NGC, KM675, S-3787, ESC-Unl. Combining rarity and gem-level preservation, this sublime specimen has a small tail to the Q of QUI on the reverse; this was a feature on 1818 Crowns which was amended on 1819 Crowns to show a thicker tail. Accordingly, this is presumably a mule struck re-using the 1818 master dies, and represents an extreme rarity thus. Aside from this, the Crown exhibits considerable beauty, immaculately preserved and wonderfully toned. The obverse boasts a deep sea of cobalt tinged with magenta, blossoming into waves of red gold as it spreads outwards across the planchet. The reverse has a more subtle patina, with a streak of blue and dashes of gold. An outstanding offering, seldom matched in the auction record.
