George III copper Proof Pattern "Hercules" Crown 1820 PR63 Brown NGC, ESC-2059 (R2; prev. 244). Plain Edge. By Droz after Monneron's French pattern (of 1792) by Dupré. Formerly considered to be a medal, this curious and very distinctive issue has long been collected as a pattern for a crown, a piece sometimes attributed to the reign of George IV but traditionally listed under the coinage of George III--it is dated the year of his death, which raises an obvious question. Blessed with a proper strike, the design elements are boldly expressed and leap out in a dramatic and almost medallic relief. With the attractive appearance being supplement by a lovely roasted cocoa hue, this piece is certain to please its future owner.
