Harrow School gold Annual Medal 1826 AU (Surface Hairlines), 44mm. 63.12gm. By William Wyon. The fineness of the gold tests at 23kt (97%). The school was founded by Sir Robert Peel. Obv. Bust of Cicero right. Rev. Seven line inscription, "Eloqventiae Latinae Praemivm Annvvm Robertvs Peel Harroviensis Harroviensibvs Proposvit," with date 1826, in Roman numerals below. Edge engraved "EDVARDVS . THORNTON . DIE . IV . IVNII . AS . MDCCCXXIX." The British Museum has a silver specimen of this medal and we find that Baldwin's sold a similar gold medal in 2008 dedicated to Charles Thorton. Struck in bold relief. Included is what appears to be the original case of issue.
