William IV Mint Error Penny (Broadstruck) 1831 MS62 Brown PCGS, KM707, S-3845. A very unusual piece, double struck with the second strike hitting the planchet out of its collar causing a broadstrike. The first of this type the cataloger has seen, despite its error status the designs are superbly sharp (presumably as the lack of collar allowed for a stronger application of the dies), the planchet a chestnut brown with residual red luster at the legends. Pleasing and rare.
