Victoria Penny 1849 MS64 Brown PCGS, KM739, S-3948. One of the rarest dates in the series by far, the 1849 Penny scarcely appears at auction in any high grades let alone near-gem like the present offering. Only one specimen is graded higher than this, an MS65 at NGC, indicating that this piece is almost at the ceiling of quality for the type. Smooth, chocolate brown surfaces glisten with a faint seafoam green luster cloaking Victoria's bold portrait, the reverse turning argent and blue at the peripheries; clearly, this piece was rescued from circulation early on by some fortuitous chance. Befitting a fine Penny collection, near unparalleled in its technical quality.
