Great Britain
Victoria bronze Proof Pattern Decimal Penny 1859 PR64 Brown NGC, Peck-1968. An intriguing pattern, produced in an attempt to introduce decimilisation into the archaic English currency system. It is no surprise that it was not adopted; not for its design, which is sensitively engraved and beautifully executed, but for its bold reshuffling of the Shilling to include just 10 Pence as opposed to the 12 Pence value it had maintained since Henry VII's reign. This specimen dazzles the viewer with its dark yet reflective fields, alight with streaks of cobalt and a golden-brown hue. Exceptionally well struck, the only blemishes this pattern seems to exhibit are minor areas of discoloration, and thus one might think it worthy of a gem level grade. Both beautiful and scarce, a must-have for the dedicated collection of British patterns.
