Victoria Proof Double Florin 1887 PR65★ NGC, KM763, S-3932. Arabic "1" in date. An exquisite gem example of the 'Barmaid's Ruin', a denomination so-called for its similarity in size to the Crown and thus confusion to those accepting coins in a fast-paced environment. The present piece is a hair's breadth from earning the 'Cameo' designation, Victoria's jubilee portrait exhibiting a smokey gray frost whilst the fields behind gleam with brilliance overlaid with a vibrant cobalt patina (commensurate with the covetable 'star' designation'). A not unusual proof to see come to market a few times a year, but certainly rare with this supreme eye appeal and lofty certified grade.
