Victoria tin Proof Pattern Crown 1887 PR63 NGC, ESC-2688 (R5; Prev. 348). By J. Rochelle Thomas for Spink & Son. An untouched pattern of immense popularity, a Crown that never was. Intended to be implemented as Victoria's Golden Jubilee Crown, this design is a marked separation from previous Crown designs, with a three-quarter bust of the Queen and unusual edge borders. Struck in a variety of metals (all of which are very rare), we are delighted to offer this tin specimen alongside its reciprocal in gold. This present piece has been conservatively graded, as besides some minor darkening to the highest points, the planchet is essentially free from contact marks; indeed, it boasts a brightness and reflectivity which one never sees in silver. Victoria's portrait has been cheated of a cameo designation, a clear contrast achieved between its matte luster and the backing mirror fields. Most Crown collections will be missing this type in any metal, and so the chance to obtain this choice specimen should not be missed by the dedicated specialist.
