University College London gold Prize Medal for Surgery 1855 MS61 NGC, 38.5mm, 31.73gm, by William Wyon. A fascinating gold medal, awarded to E. Wynne Thomas for Surgery in 1855-6 by University College London (which is, incidentally, the cataloger's alma mater). Dated 1827, this medal was engraved by Wyon in the height of neoclassicism, and depicts helmeted Pallas Athena presenting a laureate wreath as a prize. Colored a deep aged-gold with splashes of red at the peripheries, contact marks peppering the fields in line with the grade, but not detracting from this attractive 19th century golden prize.
Dr. E. Wynne Thomas was House Surgeon at University College Hospital and Demonstrator of Anatomy at University College. A rising star in the surgical world of the mid-Victorian era, in 1862 he unexpectedly converted to homeopathic medicine and resolved to practise it from then onwards. He died in 1893 after 28 years working at the Birmingham Homeopathic Hospital on Easy Row.
