Castiglione Delle Stiviere. Francesco Gonzaga gold 1/8 Doppia ND (1593-1616) AU50 NGC, KM9, Fr-201. 0.78gm. An exceptionally rare type, which is described as such in both Friedberg ("Rare") and the Standard Catalog of World Coins ("Rare"). We have never sold an example of this issue before, and we can reference only these auction appearances, (1) Two appearances in 1902 in an L&L Hamburger auction, and (2) Finarte of Milano auction on 11/76. This example possesses glistening fields, deeply toned to a near-antique appearance with elements of darker tone at the peripheries. All stated, a sensational rarity, one for the collector seeking what may well be a one-of-a-kind specimen in exceptional condition.
