Sumatra. East India Company copper Proof Pattern 2 Kepings AH 1200 (1787) PR63 Brown NGC, KM-Pn9, Pr-29, Scholten-959e (RRRR). Type with oblique milled edge. An exceedingly scarce pattern issue. The type's date AH 1200 (AD 1785/1786) is noted by Scholten to be erroneous and does not coincide with the date on the other side (1787). We could not locate any other examples of this exact variety, but other Scholten-959 examples have hammered from close to $7,000 (Baldwin's Sale 86, Lot# 545) in AU condition, to $18,000 (Baldwin's Sale 57, Lot# 888) in BU condition at current exchange rates. These varieties are similarly listed as RRRR in Scholten. Very attractively toned, with red-brown fields showing a strong presence of mint red at the legends and a profound colorful iridescence most notable on the reverse.
