James IV (1488-1513) gold Unicorn ND VF25 NGC, Edinburgh mint, Type 1, lis mm, 3.75gm, S-5315, Fr-18. + IΛCOBVS : DЄI • GRΛCIΛ : RЄX : SCOTTORV, unicorn left supporting royal arms, a crown of five lis around its neck / + ЄXVRGΛT DЄVS DISIPЄnT INIMЄIЄ, rayed star over cross fleurée. A charming denomination featuring a unicorn on the obverse, the present specimen is well struck with considerable circulation (hence the grade). The majority of worn Scottish gold was melted down in the late 16th century for production of new coins, making this piece a rather scarce survivor! Dark charcoal tone fills the recesses of the legends, and a planchet flaw is present through the obverse shield; however, the detail remains pleasing, and the piece is attractive overall. An excellent type coin.
