Ancients
Divus Claudius I (died AD 54). AV aureus (19mm, 7.60 gm, 9h). NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 3/5, marks. Lugdunum (or Rome), ca. October-December AD 54. DIVVS CLAVDIVS AVGVSTVS, laureate head of Claudius I left / Tensa drawn right by four horses; the tensa with pediment like a temple and decorated with two pateras and a lituus, surmounted by four small horses and flanked by two Victories, on the side panel of the car a standing frontal figure holding scepter or spear and a Victory advancing right holding out wreath; on the front panel, a standing figure and a wreath; EX S C in exergue. RIC I 4 (Nero). Calicò 354a. Wonderfully detailed with hints of luster.

From the Morris Collection. Ex Gemini VI (10 January 2010), lot 812; MFA inventory no. 1975.772; Cornelius C. Vermeule III collection; purchased by the Theodora Wilbour Fund in memory of Zoe Wilbour in 1975.

A tensa was used to transport the attributes of a god to the circus in the procession before circus games, and was occasionally used to honor deified emperors as displayed on this issue and similar of Divus Vespasian.
