IMPP • INVICTI • PII • AVGG, jugate busts of Septimius Severus, laureate, draped and cuirassed, seen from behind, and Caracalla, laureate and draped, seen from front / VICTORIA PARTHICA MAXIMA, Victory advancing left, wreath upward in right hand, palm branch on left arm. RIC IV.I 311. Cohen 8. Biaggi 1127. BMC 265. Calicó 2597b. Hill 677. Extremely rare. Bright and lustrous with magnificent eye appeal.
From the Morris Collection. Ex Leu 93 (10 May 2005), lot 57; Bought privately from E. Bourgey in October 1966, and very possibly from the Karnak Hoard of 1901.
Hill suggests this issue was struck to mark the dedication of the Arch of Septimius Severus built the previous year for his victories over the Parthians.
