This interesting series of aurei and denarii was issued at the beginning of Severus' reign in honor of the legions that fought for him in the Danube. One of his first actions as emperor was to replace the Praetorian Guard (who murdered the previous emperor Pertinax) with 15,000 of his own loyal legionaries. He was a military man to the end and understood that keeping the troops happy was the key to living a long life as emperor. The advice he gave to his sons on his death bed was "be good to each other, pay the soldiers well, and the rest can to go to hell." Although Legio IV Flavia Felix is known on denarii, this is apparently the first appearance of this legion on an aureus.
