Septimius Severus (AD 193-211). AE as (25mm, 10.22 gm, 5h). NGC XF 5/5 - 2/5, smoothing. Rome, AD 208. SEVERVS-PIVS AVG, laureate bust of Septimius Severus right, aegis on left shoulder / P M TR P XVI / COS III P P / S C, bridge with arches, five people walking across, towers in the form of a triumphal arch at both ends, surmounted by facing quadriga between two Victories, with three arches below; boat with oars sailing left with two riders on waves below. The complex and detailed reverse design copies an earlier type of Trajan (RIC II 569), depicting the Danube Bridge that he constructed during the celebrated Dacian Wars, but here probably serves to represent a bridge built across the Firth of Forth during the Severan Caledonian campaign.
