Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius (19mm, 3.25 gm, 5h). NGC MS 5/5 - 4/5. Lugdunum, 15-13 BC. AVGVSTVS-DIVI • F, bare head of Augustus right / IMP • X, bull charging right, head lowered. RIC I 167a. A lovely specimen, cleanly struck from fresh dies in excellent metal on fully lustrous surfaces.

The charging bull seen on this any many other coins of Augustus is thought to be a reference to his father's victory near the Greco-Italian city of Thurium over a rebellious band of slaves. Augustus was actually given the name Gaius Octavius Thurinus at birth to mark the event. The symbol of Thurium, seen on many of its coins, has a very similar charging bull.
