IONIA. Uncertain mint. Ca. 625-550 BC. EL stater (21mm, 16.49 gm). NGC AU 4/5 - 4/5. Phocaic standard. Lion (or panther) standing right, head facing; raised square above, all on convex circle (shield?) / Two incuse squares of unequal size with irregular interior surfaces. Unpublished, but cf. Kunstfreund 1 for a Phocaic stater with a lioness standing and similar punches. Another example of this otherwise unknown type was sold in Heritage Auctions 3066 (17 August 2018), lot 30050 (realized $30,000). Frosty lustrous surfaces. Very rare and important early issue.
