Australia
South Australia. British Colony - Victoria gold "Adelaide" Pound 1852 AU58 PCGS, KM2, Fr-3. Type II reverse with dentilated inner border. Issued by the Government Assay Office in Adelaide. This nearly uncirculated specimen contains a blend of warm, reddish tones against harvest-gold surfaces. A scattering of minor abrasions, typical for this type, reside in the fields, but the deeply impressed design illustrations show virtually no signs of wear. While the initial emission of such pieces numbered around 25,000--an already rather low figure--a substantial quantity were melted down as the gold value surpassed face value. In all, a strong representative of this revered type, and in a state of preservation that will undoubtedly spark interest among collectors of this South Australian issue.
