Pedro II gold 4000 Reis 1702-P MS62 NGC, Pernambuco mint, KM99, Russo-39, Gomes-33.01. Another exceptional Brazilian rarity, this 4000 Reis of 1702 was the only gold coin struck at the Pernambuco mint (P) which functioned mainly to produce silver coins (mostly 640 Reis) in the short period it operated from 1700 to 1702. This is the second example of this issue that we have had the pleasure to offer, as we sold an XF Details example in our CICF sale for a hammer price of $12,000. This beauty far exceeds that selection in all regards, with stunning lemon-gold color that permeates the entirety of the flan, raised designs that have been boldly rendered, and surfaces that have remained free of any mentionable handling. An incomparable specimen in total, and a wondrous opportunity for those specialized collectors who have been searching for a Mint State example of this rare type.
