João V gold 20000 Reis 1724-M MS62 NGC, Minas Gerais mint, KM117, LMB-0248. A superb rendition of this imposing large gold issue, which, though struck slightly off-center, carries a level of charm and originality rarely encountered. As is more common with the type, the characters are struck up in near-medallic fashion, resulting in an impressive degree of boldness. However, it is the exceptional preservation that brings this coin to a higher level, a delightful shimmering luster present throughout the surfaces on both the obverse and reverse. The offering shows no larger imperfections, the only instances worthy of mention taking the form of a few light marks on the reverse within the arms of the cross. A very special coin from a series that did not begin production until late 1724, making this year the key date within the series.
