João V gold 20000 Reis 1727-M MS63 NGC, Minas Gerais mint, KM117, Russo-251. Exceedingly scarce in Mint State, much more so in choice certification, the present offering exudes the full feel of New World treasure, with its bold design motifs complemented by virtually abrasion-free satiny golden surfaces. Being such a heavy issue (with an AGW exceeding 1.5 oz.), the 20000 Reis of this type would have been especially susceptible to drops, hits, and otherwise rough handling, though this example has remarkably retained its stellar and original appeal with no such issues evident. An imposing 18th-century offering which is likely to take a central position in any future owner's cabinet.
