João VI gold 4000 Reis 1820-(B) MS62 NGC, Bahia mint, KM327.3, Russo-581. Lightly toned, and with boldly executed design features, this absolute rarity struck at the Bahia Mint without mintmark is listed simply as "Rare" or "Extremely Rare" in every reference material we have consulted: the SCWC, Russo, Gomez, Salgado, Prober and others. Notably missing from Eliasberg, Norweb and most importantly Carlos Costa's collection which now sits at the Banco Espirito Santo Museum. The only record we know of an 1820 Bahia 4000 Reis is from the Thomas Faistauer collection sold by Hess-Divo in the 1990s (which may well be this very coin). In total, this is a major numismatic issue--struck in Brazil upon the dawn of independence--in an incomparable Mint State quality that should immediately engage the specialized collectors of Brazilian gold. We last offered this exact coin in our 2012 Long Beach sale where it hammered for an incredible $110,000, and no other examples have been offered in the marketplace since that time.
