Pedro II gold 4000 Reis 1832-R MS61 NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM386.1, Russo-610. Mintage: 64. Utterly scarce at the Mint State level, featured here with brilliant, canary-gold surfaces throughout, an emboldened strike that has left the designs fully produced, and substantial luster that illuminates the fields. This fleeting 4000 Reis series is comprised of two dates, the second date (1833/2) is scarce, but this first year of issue even more so, with a mintage figure that is only a quarter of its counterpart. For reference, we handled the AU55 example from the RLM Collection in our 2014 NYINC sale, and that coin hammered for $42,500. As such, this marks a wonderful opportunity for the advanced collectors of Brazilian coinage to own this classic rarity.
With Pedro I leaving Brazil to regain the throne in Portugal, young Pedro was elevated to Emperor of Brazil at the age of 7. His father selected three people to be guardians of the Emperor until 1841 when he was acclaimed and crowned.
