Elizabeth II gold Off-Metal Proof 15 Dollars 1992 PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC, Royal Canadian mint, cf. KM215 (for original type in silver). 1992 Olympics series: Spirit of the Generations. By Stewart Sherwood. An enigmatic mint error, the original silver planchet for this Olympic issue erroneously substituted with a 1 oz gold Maple Leaf blank. One sees off-metal strikes rear their heads every so often, but only extremely rarely does one see anything accidentally produced in gold (as production standards are generally much higher for gold coins). Accordingly, this coin really should not exist. That being said, the engraving designed for silver is stunning on this elite planchet, the devices luxuriously frosted and the fields gleaming, endless mirrors. The rims are weak at the lower half of the coin, as the Maple Leaf planchet did not have quite enough metal to fill the die in its entirety. A wonderful modern numismatic enigma of undeniable beauty, and certain to appeal to the highest-tier collector of Canadian errors.
