Brandenburg. Friedrich III gold Ducat 1688-LCS AU55 NGC, Berlin mint, KM543, Fr-2285 (under Prussia). 3.46gm. An impressive trade coin for use in Guinea, this rare ducat issue features the draped bust of Friedrich III with a three-masted sailing ship at sea, Brandenburg flag at the stern, and winds blowing from the clouds. Mild wear is noted across the illustrative designs, while the surfaces are patinated a lovely olive-gold, and the flan contains a slight, as-made wave.
Dutch ship-owner Benjamin Raule founded the Brandenburg-African Company in 1682, and was a proponent of developing overseas trade. Under Major Otto Friedrich von der Groeben, he initiated an expedition to Guinea to set up a small colony, and on January 1, 1683, he raised the Brandenburg flag. These popular ship ducats were minted from 1683 to 1696 from African gold at the Berlin mint.
