German States
Hesse-Cassel. Wilhelm II (1493-1509) Goldgulden 1506 AU58+ PCGS, Fr-1235. Of exceptional rarity, one of the final Hessian coins produced before Philipp, Wilhem's successor, spearheaded the Reformation and organized the Hessian churches according to Protestant principles. This piece represents the sole example certified by PCGS, practically Mint State with bold detail and residual luster, the obverse depiction of Saint Elizabeth (mother of the Virgin Mary) holding the Church away from a beggar at her feet fully represented through a sharp strike. Almost never seen at auction, let alone in this grade and without the damage exhibited by some pieces. Thoroughly pleasing and extremely rare, an early dated Hessian piece sure to entice strong bidding from German States collectors.
