George II gold Proof 1/2 Guinea 1728 PR63 NGC, KM565.1, S-3681, W&R-75 (R4). Though Wilson and Rasmussen give this type a rarity rating of R4, meaning 11-20 specimens known, this type actually appears to be much scarcer than other types in the WR reference with higher rarity ratings. We handled this same Half Guinea in our August 2017 ANA sale, where it realized $18,000; in the short time since, the market for high-grade English Proofs has skyrocketed, and we anticipate even greater interest for this stunning Proof of Record. Pleasing warm red toning, highly reflective surfaces and only insignificant instances of handling give this coin great eye-appeal, and it is certainly premium for the grade. An enticing offering with an impressive pedigree.
