George III gold Proof Sovereign 1817 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM674, S-3785, W&R-197 (R5). A simply incredible coin and one which needs to be seen to be believed, produced only as a Proof of Record and yet clearly made with loving care and to create maximum visual effect. This beauty has deeply mirrored fields outlining heavily frosted central devices which seem to float upon the fields; George's portrait is, in a word, perfect, richly coated in white-gold frost in a pristine cameo as is the reverse depiction of St. George slaying the dragon. The obverse legend and the reverse Order of the Garter legend are also frosted, a contrast which produces a dramatic impact on the eye. Pistrucci created a few pattern Sovereigns in 1816, but it was this 1817 design featuring St. George which was ultimately adopted to replace the Guinea and which arguably boasts the greatest eye-appeal. Of the ten 1817 Proof Sovereigns graded by either NGC or PCGS, only this specimen and one other reside at the PR65 grade level (highest for this type), and the other example does not bear even a 'cameo' designation, let alone 'ultra cameo' as exhibited here. Even the business strike of this variety rarely enters higher Mint State levels, and as such the present immaculate Proof is unlike any other 1817 specimen on the market in its rarity, beauty and technical grade. Absolutely exquisite, a numismatic masterpiece.
