George IV gold Proof Sovereign 1821 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM682, S-3800, W&R-231 (R3). Struck as the largest denomination in the enigmatic 1821 Proof Set produced for George IV's coronation, for which mintage figures are not known but are unanimously considered to be extremely limited. Almost no original and complete sets are known to exist today, and the last the cataloger can find record of sold in our NYINC sale 340 in 2004; consisting of just 6 coins, this was the smallest British set behind the 1746 4-piece group. Accordingly, all 1821 Proofs are rare and ever-popular, especially the Sovereign represented here in lofty near-gem grade. Its fields are flashy yellow-white mirrors with only minor contact marks, backlighting the frosty depictions of George IV's first laureate portrait and St. George and dragon with almost no breaks to their matte coat. The last PR64 graded example of this variety we handled was in our August 2014 ANA sale where it realized $11,500 hammer; that piece did not bear the 'ultra cameo' designation boasted by this present specimen, and the market for high-grade British Proofs has grown enormously since 2014. We thus fully expect this superb Sovereign to attract far stronger bidding when it crosses the auction block.
