George V gold Proof 5 Pounds 1911 PR64+ Cameo NGC, KM822, S-3994, W&R-414. A superb example of this massive 1911 5 Pound issue, offered solely in Proof as part of George V's coronation set; a glorious golden testament of loyalty to the new King. Only 2,812 of these coins were produced, and of this limited number surely few can match the eye-appeal of this specimen. The coveted 'cameo' designation this specimen boasts is a rarity for this type, with just 37 of the 171 examples graded by NGC bearing the designation. George's delicately frosted portrait gleams atop fields imbued with die polish lines, subduing the brilliance to an attractive matte finish; the planchet colored a rich butter-gold, the devices exhibiting absolutely no wear nor contact marks, this sublime specimen is perhaps cheated of that final push into gem status. Today's collector is fortunate to see many of this type enter the market on a regular basis--but not of the standard held by this offering.
