George VI gold Proof 5 Pounds 1937 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS, KM861, S-4074. Of the original 5,500 Proof 5 Pounds produced in 1937, 773 have been graded by NGC or PCGS. Of this number, just 48 have been graded PR66, with 5 PR67 examples representing the top grade level for the type. That places the present offering firmly within the top 7% of graded specimens and near the ceiling of technical quality for the type--additionally, not all of those topping the rankings bear the lofty 'deep/ultra cameo' designation exhibited by this premium example. George's portrait stands out starkly from the pristine mirror fields through luxurious matte frosting, a light rose-gold tint to the planchet, the eye appeal superb and quite extraordinary for the type. The last PR66 offering of this type that we handled sold at our August 2017 ANA sale for $40,800, and we have no doubts that this present specimen will generate comparative excitement.
