George VI gold Proof 5 Pounds 1937 PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM861, S-4074. The largest denomination of the 1937 coronation Proof Set, and presented here in covetable Choice Mint State. However, despite the admirable grade, it is arguably the 'Ultra Cameo' designation which sets this example apart from others of the type. Of 385 specimens certified by NGC at present, only 82 have been deemed Ultra Cameo worthy. This is because, unlike other notable Proof Sets (e.g. the 1893), the finish of the 1937 issue was extremely variable; some appear entirely glossy, others with a marked frosting to George's portrait. The present offering boasts a luxurious matte gold finish to the devices, the fields behind bright and reflective, scattered contact marks in the field defining the grade but unsuccessful in detracting from the eye appeal of this premium 5 Pound piece.
