Islamic Dynasties
Ottoman Empire. Abdul Hamid II gold 500 Qirsh AH 1293 Year 1 (1876/1877) MS61 NGC, Misr (Cairo) mint (in Egypt), KM286, Fr-17, Pere-973. A beautiful, superlative specimen, and a type rarely encountered in Mint State (or indeed in any grade). Brilliant mint luster dazzles the viewer, sparkling across the planchet in a pseudo-prooflike effect, the entire disk overlaid with a light orange hue. Numerous contact marks are peppered throughout the field, but these disappear in proximity to the devices, giving charming areas of sleek smoothness exhibiting light die-polish lines. The most recent piece of this type we handled was at our January 2018 NYINC sale, an MS62 which realized $19,200; this piece, just one grade point beneath, will likely attract similar bidder interest.
