Japan
Netherlands East Indies. Japanese Occupation aluminium Proof Sen NE 2603 (1943) PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM-YA66. Struck for use in Japan-occupied Netherland East Indies. By 1944 the war had turned to such an extent that shipping coins from the Osaka mint where they were produced became impossible, and the vast majority were remelted. Accordingly, even currency strikes are extremely scarce, let alone this aluminium Proof which appears to be the only one known! Marked with the simple inscription 'Dai Nippon' (Great Japan), this piece boasts silvery mirror fields, its color closer to a platinum than silver; both the obverse and reverse designs are delicately frosted with matte luster, a beautiful contrast. We had the pleasure of handling the only known silver example of this type in September 2011, where it realized $9,000 hammer, and we can only anticipate the excitement that this Proof will generate when it crosses the auction block.
