Korea
Russian Domination. Kuang Mu 1/2 Won Year 5 (1901) XF45 PCGS, KM1123. Extremely rare. Increased Russian influence in Korea from 1896-1904 resulted in three types of coins (1 Chon, 5 Chon, and 1/2 Won) being struck with a Russian eagle in place of the Japanese style dragon. These pieces were one-year types authorized and issued by financial advisor Alexiev of the Russo-Korean Bank. All are very rare, but the 1/2 Won is the rarest of the three pieces by far. The present specimen is highly attractive for the grade, boldly detailed with limited high-point wear. The obverse shows a dark steel-blue tone filling the outer border between the legend, whilst the reverse exhibits a light gold tone gently warming the planchet. From a short-lived and ever popular series, this seldom-offered type will likely elicit strong bidding from eager collectors.
