Martinique
French Colonial gold Regulated/Countermarked 20 Livres ND (c. 1805) AU55 NGC, KM32, Gordon-18. Type B "20 over eagle" counterstamp on imitation Brazil 1767-R 6400 Reis. Struck by decree dated September 26th, 1805 that specified genuine Portuguese and other whole coins of the same fineness be marked with a "22 (livres) over eagle" stamp, while fabrications of lighter weight, such as the present coin of 10.8g, be marked with a "20 over eagle" mark. A colonial rarity of significant collector interest, and of strong eye appeal. The host imitation appears almost as-made with only the lightest of rubbing to the highest points; the centers are a rich aged-gold in color whilst the peripheries bear a subdued red tone. The 20 over eagle countermark has been firmly applied, the pressure greater on the left hand side giving a slight weakness to the '0' but leaving the entirety clear and legible and overlaid with a peach patina. We sold a similar example at our January 2016 NYINC sale for a hammer price of $9,000, and interest in this colonial series has only increased since then. Certainly worthy of a strong bid.
