Netherlands
Kingdom of Holland. Louis Napoleon silver Pattern 50 Stuivers 1807 MS63 NGC, by J. G. Holzhey, Sch-140, V.G.-1540. Of utmost rarity, this pattern is produced to a far finer standard than the adopted business strike 50 Stuivers; Holzhey was clearly keen to impress with this piece, an endeavor in which was certainly successful. Bearing bold edge dentils so often diagnostic of an essai striking, the crisp edge of this piece bears the incuse legend "SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM", or "THE NAME OF GOD", so delicately done as to appear engraved by hand. Napoleon's portrait is performed sensitively and to a very high degree of quality, with every lock of his hair boldly represented and falling in a dynamic, non-linear pattern. The argent planchet has toned (presumably during a long stint in a high-tier Dutch collection), developing a light gold halo to the razor-sharp devices, vastly adding to the eye appeal. A die-break is noted on the reverse at 12 o'clock, although this is minor and unobtrusive. With just one other specimen of this type certified by either NGC or PCGS, this extremely rare pattern represents an exceptional offering, and an unmissable opportunity.
