Dutch Colony. United East India Company 24 Stuivers (1/2 Crown) 1645 XF45 NGC, KM33, Scholten-14 (RRR), Mailliet-13.2. Batavia emergency coinage with cinquefoil counterstamp. Struck by emergency order in February 1625, this now very rare type was made so due to subsequent events, whereby many counterfeit specimens drove an eventual decision to melt down most of the coinage as early as 1647. The present example, the only one certified by NGC, exudes complete originality and strong character, expressing a significant degree of detail throughout its slightly granular surfaces, which convey a sense of great age. Deeply toned, exhibiting some lightening at the higher points and a degree of unevenness at the peripheries as expected for the type. Perhaps said succinctly, utterly authentic!
