Netherlands East Indies
Dutch Colony. United East India Company Ducaton (Silver Rider) 1739 MS64 NGC, Dordrecht (Holland) mint, KM71, Dav-417, Sch-28b (RR). Reeded edge. Commonly thought of as a presentation issue for the year, this 'fine style' Silver Rider shows positively Pattern-like quality of execution. Of indisputably great beauty, the engraving detail on the Rider's armor is exquisite, every rivet and link represented in razor-sharp detail, the reverse crest similarly crisp; this trade piece appears far more medallic than is usual for the type as a whole. With handsome tone, lustrous gray surfaces darkening to shadows behind the bold legends, the eye appeal this piece commands is captivating. Unsurprisingly, this is the highest graded of this edge type by NGC. It is rather difficult to imagine a silver coin of this era matching the present offering for beauty, and we do not doubt that this piece will attain a strong bid commensurate with its quality.
