Netherlands East Indies
Dutch Colony. Batavian Republic gold Gulden 1802 MS64 NGC, Enkhuizen mint, cf. KM83a, Sch-489 (RRR). 12.30gm. Off-metal striking in gold. An exceedingly rare gold issue, immaculately preserved with glossy prooflike surfaces of apricot gold overlaid with a light peach tone. Many large gold pieces around this time encountered some sort of adulteration, be it through mounting as jewelery, cleaning or simply scratching; this example, however, has managed to survive in incredible near-gem grade, and represents the single highest graded specimen by either NGC or PCGS. The last example of this type that we handled was UNC Details (Obverse scratched, cleaned), which realized $9,987.50 in January 2016; another example offered that same month sold raw for $25,000 hammer. Accordingly, we can only anticipate the collector response for this stunning gold strike of elite preservation and the highest rarity.
